Frequently Asked Questions

Ozempic & Semaglutide FAQ

Everything South African patients ask us about prescriptions, pricing, medical aid and safety — in one place.

Prescriptions & Legality

Getting a Prescription

Yes. Ozempic is a Schedule 4 medicine and can only be dispensed by a pharmacy against a valid prescription from a registered healthcare provider.
A GP can prescribe Ozempic for type 2 diabetes. Many patients are managed by their GP alone, though some are referred to an endocrinologist or diabetologist for more complex cases.
Ozempic is registered for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss — Wegovy holds that registration. Doctors can still prescribe Ozempic "off-label" at their clinical discretion, but Wegovy is the medicine actually approved and dosed for chronic weight management.
Pricing & Medical Aid

Cost & Cover

South Africa regulates the manufacturer's Single Exit Price (SEP) — the same for every pharmacy in the country — but each pharmacy adds its own regulated dispensing fee on top, and runs its own promotions and loyalty discounts. That combination is why the final shelf price differs from store to store.
It depends on your scheme and plan option. Type 2 diabetes is a Prescribed Minimum Benefit (PMB) chronic condition, so Ozempic used for diabetes is more commonly covered from chronic medicine benefits than Wegovy used purely for weight management, which many schemes still treat as a self-pay or limited-cover item. Confirm your specific formulary with your medical aid.
Sun Pharma's generic semaglutide was approved by SAHPRA in July 2026, and Novo Nordisk launched a lower-cost version called Extensior through its partner Acino the same month. See our generic semaglutide guide for details as pricing becomes public.
We compile pricing from publicly available pharmacy information and pharmaceutical industry reporting. Figures are indicative and may not reflect the exact price at your nearest branch today — always confirm before you buy.
Safety & Side Effects

Using Ozempic Safely

Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort are most commonly reported, especially during the first few weeks or after a dose increase. This is general information, not medical advice — discuss any side effects with your doctor or pharmacist.
Unopened pens should be refrigerated at 2–8°C. Once in use, most pens can be kept at room temperature (below 30°C) for a limited number of weeks — check the specific pen's package insert, and never freeze it.
Only buy from a SAPC-registered pharmacy dispensing a SAHPRA-registered product against a valid prescription. Be cautious of any "semaglutide" sold without proper pharmacy labelling — SAHPRA took enforcement action in May 2026 against an unregistered compounding operation found selling unsafe GLP-1 injections. See our buyer's safety guide.
Buying & Delivery

Getting Your Medicine

Yes — most major chains and telehealth-linked pharmacies offer nationwide courier delivery of prescription medicine, usually in cold-chain packaging.
Global supply constraints mean stock can be intermittent. Check 2–3 nearby branches, ask your pharmacy to order it in, or use a telehealth-linked pharmacy with nationwide courier stock.
Based on our tracked pricing, Medirite and Clicks are typically the most competitively priced, with Dis-Chem and independents like Alpha Pharm slightly higher — see the full live comparison for current figures.
